There are many life coaching training programs and institutes. In fact, a Google search for “life coaching training” will give you a whopping 38,400,000 results. So how do you know which life coaching training is right for you?
The truth is, you don’t need life coaching training to be a life coach. Having adequate life experience, a drive for success and helping people, and a company name (a DBA is fine) will get you started. However, a little bit of training can make a huge difference in your success.
It’s also good to know what you’re getting into. In college, I knew that choosing a degree program and sticking to it would save me time and money. Then I went to school for two semesters and realized the degree I’d chosen was extraordinarily dull. I had absolutely no interest in finishing the degree, much less making a career out of it.
Naturally, I had to change my program and rebuild. You don’t need to make the same mistake I did. In fact, there are only a few things you need to know before beginning a life coaching training and career:
1. Do you really want to be a life coach? Know this before you do anything else. Do people come to you for support and value your ability to listen to them without judgement? Are you a fairly balanced person who can achieve goals and maintain integrity? These are just some of the markers of a future life coach.
2. Build on what you know. You don’t have to be an expert in every area of life to be a life coach. If you’re in a strong, loving marriage, think about coaching married couples. Whatever it is you’re good at, focus on expanding your current skills. A good training program should support any kind of life coaching you choose to do.
3. Many coaches are also entrepreneurs. Having your own coaching business means you don’t have to rely on finding a coaching job. It’s also a great opportunity to challenge yourself, gain experience, and achieve unlimited success. However, you must be willing to promote yourself. Good coach training will teach you what you need to know in marketing and business.
4. Training makes you a more valuable coach. You’ve probably been informally coaching people for years, giving advice and support to friends and family. With life coaching training, you want to make sure that you’re gaining skills and abilities that actually help you transform people’s lives.
